Why I'm a Habitual Reader:
I’ve read all my life, and I discovered books all on my own. My parents were not readers, so I found reading all by myself. When I was a little girl, the highlight of my week was going to the library after school every Friday. I started with the different colored fairy books that took me away to a wonderful new place of magic and color and stories and, best of all, new people to meet. From there I just kept going, reading and reading and reading.
Everyone says they read for enjoyment and entertainment. Me, too. But it’s the people I meet in books that makes reading so wonderful. I like to read about goodness, the goodness in people. For example, people like Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird, who is such a fine man. People like Atticus and stories like this teach me tolerance and kindness.
I’ve raised two sons, one is now a writer with a published novel. But that isn’t why I bring up my sons here. I wanted my sons to love reading too. So I started reading to each of them when they were four months old. One of my favorite memories is of reading Dr. Seuss to the younger one. Kenny was maybe five then. When we finished the book, Kenny said, “I wish Dr. Seuss was my friend.” I love that he said that. I too think of the good characters in books as my friends. I knew then that he would be like me. He would always love books and reading. And both my sons still love to read like I do.
