Why I'm a Habitual Reader:

It’s an addiction. When I have less than ten unread books on my nightstand, I start to get anxious--what if I wake up in the middle of the night and don’t have anything to read?

I experienced the agony of story-withdrawal on a trip to the island of Moorea about 15 years ago. I brought a healthy stack of paperbacks to read on the beach…and they were stolen out of my hotel room on the first night! You’re thinking, why didn’t they steal my jewelry, my expensive swimsuit, my CASH? Because at that time there was not a single book available for sale on the entire island. I know this because while others were scuba diving or tanning or sailing, I was on a small uncomfortable bus, circling the island, searching for any kind of civilization…and by that I mean a bookstore, a newsstand, anything! I can’t believe I spent $2000 for that vacation.

Sometime after that, I had just given birth to my third child, and I started to look for a particular story, some kind of action/adventure with a mommy as a hero. I couldn’t find ANY. Visions of circling that island in that bus came back to me, and I decided I had to write my own story…so I did. Now, I’m not only an addicted reader, but an addicted writer. Will I never get this monkey off my back?!
