Why I'm a Habitual Reader:
I've been an avid reader as long as I can remember. When I was a child, reading was one of my favorite things to do, and it's one of the few things that has been a constant throughout my life. Now, I'm reading more than ever - both for my own enjoyment and education, and also with my eight-year-old son, who I'm homeschooling. All signs point to him being another habitual reader, as well.
My List of Ten: Favorite Fiction
1. Life of Pi
Author: Yann Martel
Such a magical book, one which drew me into the story in a way I hadn't been
drawn into a book since I was a child.
2. Inkheart
Author: Cornelia Funke
A true book-lovers' book; a great fantasy adventure about books and the people
who love them.
3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Author: J.K. Rowling
I love the entire Harry Potter series, but this is my favorite volume. Great
characters and the stories are plotted in a way that makes it such fun to try
and figure out what is going to happen next.
4. The Haunted Mountain
Author: Mollie Hunter
This was a favorite when I was a child, and it's stood the test of time. A
story set in the Scottish Highlands, about one man's struggle against the "Sidhe," or
faerie people.
5. The Eight
Author: Katherine Neville
A great chess-based secret-society mystery story. Predates "DaVinci Code" by
several years, and surpasses it in every way.
6. Poisonwood Bible
Author: Barbara Kingsolver
I loved this book so much, I turned around and read it a second time almost
immediately after finishing it. The story of four girls whose missionary father
took them to live in the Congo. Fascinating, riveting, heartbreaking. A book
that really made me think.
7. The Master and Margarita
Author: Mikhail Bulgakov
A great story about Satan and some of the mischief he spreads during a few
days in Russia. A great conceptualization of the Devil, and a satisfying, fun
story, too.
8. The Bonesetter's Daughter
Author: Amy Tan
A beautiful book about family, particularly the relationships between mothers,
sisters and daughters.
9. The Witching Hour
Author: Anne Rice
A great horror story which follows a family of witches through several generations.
It's the sort of sweeping historical saga I love, with a creepy and macabre
setting. Beautiful and haunting (although the subsequent books in the series
didn't live up to this first volume).
10. The Last Time They Met
Author: Anita Shreve
An amazing book with a mind-blowing ending. This is my favorite book by Shreve,
who is an author I really enjoy.
