Why I'm a Habitual Reader:
I'm a writer because I have always loved books, so of course I'm constantly reading--to learn, to improve my own voice, to escape, to enjoy, to be inspired, enlightened, shocked, cracked up and woken up!
My List of Ten: Novels
1. Blu's Hanging
Author: Lois Ann Yamanaka
The best book about what it feels like to be a child. Totally unsentimental
and real.
2. Horse Crazy
Author: Gary Indiana
A fantastic book about obsession and crush by an author who can reflect on
all that entails.
3. The Man Who Fell in Love With the Moon
Author: Tom Spanbauer
This book has such an incredible voice, beautifully poetic and fun and profound
and spot on with its Native Am. perspective.
4. Beautiful Losers
Author: Leonard Cohen
An incredibly poetic and insightful book by one of the greatest songwriters
of our time.
5. The Great Gatsby
Author: F Scott Fitzgerald
I've always thought this was the perfect succinct little novel.
6. The Passion
Author: Jeannette Winterson
An extraordinary novel, with pretty much everything: history, poetry, incredible
writing sentence by sentence.
7. Tess of the Durbervilles
Author: Thomas Hardy
The descriptive writing about nature and seasons in this book is unrivaled.
8. Anna Karenina
Author: Leo Tolstoy
The greatest of the Victorian adultery novels.
9. Confessions of a Mask
Author: Yukio Mishima
The best coming out story.
10. Dharma Bums
Author: Jack Kerouac
All Kerouac's poetry coupled with the wilderness and the most positive and
Buddhist of his books.
