Why I'm a Habitual Reader:
As a habitual reader, my need to learn, to be entertained, to be thrilled, to sometimes escape, are all fulfilled by reading. It's a total saturation of the mind with no commercial interruptions.
As a writer, reading both good and not-so-good books teaches me style and formatting of plot and character that no amount of classroom time could ever teach me.
Along that same line, I think one of the best and most on-target quotes for writers was one from Stephen King's book "On Writing:" "If you don't have the time to read, you don't have the time or the tools to write."
My List of Ten: Books I've Never Forgotten
1. To Kill A Mockingbird
Author: Harper Lee
My absolute favorite novel of all time. It made me want to be a writer.
2. Roots
Author: Alex Haley
It mesmerized me and still does. Incredible writing and story.
3. Gone With the Wind
Author: Margaret Mitchell
My first epic read and I wallowed with delight in every page and have read
it 3 times.
4. Murder Runs In The Family
Author: Anne George
Convinced me to write humorous mysteries.
5. The Godfather
Author: Mario Puzo
Should be on everyone's favorite fiction list.
6. Great Expectations
Author: Charles Dickens
Forced to read it in school, it was the book that turned me onto the classics,
particularly Dickens and Dumas.
7. Outlander
Author: Diana Gabaldon
Turned me onto Gabaldon's delightful and detailed historical series.
8. Desert Blood: The Juarez Murders
Author: Alicia Gaspar De Alba
Favorite book of 2006
9. The Chronicles of Narnia (the whole set)
Author: C. S. Lewis
I'm not much into fantasy, but these I adore and have read several times over
the past 30 years.
10. Too Big To Miss
Author: Sue Ann Jaffarian
My very first published novel and the book that fullfilled my dream of becoming
a published author. How could it not be on my Top 10 List?!
