Why I'm a Habitual Reader:
At 40, when my eyesight weakened, I realized I read everything--from shampoo bottles in the shower to cereal boxes and toothpaste tubes. Since my teens, I have written: hundreds of news and magazine articles, contributed to two non-fiction volumes, have six novels in print and a dozen uncontracted manuscripts. When writers get discouraged and threaten to quit, I say, "Quit if you can!" Some cannot. Curse or gift, it is what it is.
My List of Ten: Mesmerizing reads
1. Gaudy Night
Author: Dorothy L. Sayers
The characters intrigue and pull me into the scenes as participant rather than
spectator.
2. Lord of the Rings
Author: J.R.R. Tolkien
The images translate from the author's mind to mine.
3. Three to Get Deadly
Author: Janet Evanovich
It always catches me by surprise and makes me laugh out loud.
4. The Listener
Author: Steve Copling
It is too scary to read when I am home alone.
5. Kingdom of Dreams
Author: Judith McNaught
The romance is smooth, unusual and doesn't seem contrived.
6. The Red Dragon
Author: Thomas Harris
When I want a good scare, this one does it for me.
7. The Concrete Blonde
Author: Michael Connelly
I like Connelly's style of writing.
8. McNally (series)
Author: Lawrence Sanders
His writing is fast-paced, the story delivered quickly.
9. Kiss the Girls
Author: James Patterson
His newspaper style is brisk when I'm in the mood, his mysteries imaginative.
10. Peter Wimsey Mysteries
Author: Dorothy L. Sayers
Her thorough writing style suits my quieter moods.
