Sarah Baker Name: Sarah Baker
State: New Mexico
Vocation / Avocation: Engineer by day; fiction writer by night, weekend, and holiday

Why I'm a Habitual Reader:

Hi. My name is Sarah, and I'm a habitual reader. To make matters worse, I must visit a store at least once a week to sniff books. There's nothing like the scent of ink on paper. Yes, I know it's an addiction, and I can't find a suitable patch.

It all started with my parents reading to me nightly before I knew not to eat the pages, and I passed the tradition on by reading to my little sister. Dr. Seuss backwards probably didn't do much for putting her to sleep, but we both enjoyed it.

As a Southerner, I appreciate good storytellers, and, therefore, good books. I try not to collect too many because I move fairly often, but getting rid of them isn't easy for me. Now that I write, I can claim a few hundred books as references and get away with it (I hope).

The only thing more wonderful than escaping into reading a book is escaping into writing one. If only I didn't have to earn a real living.

My List of Ten: Top Ten Books at the Moment

1. In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead
Author: James Lee Burke
I love all of JLB's books; this is just my favorite tonight. I think I have them all, too. They're references. No, really!

2. A Morbid Taste for Bones
Author: Ellis Peters
Another favorite author. I love the Cadfael Chronicles, as well as the Detective Felse series.

3. Smoky the Cowhorse
Author: Will James
This was my favorite book as a kid. I really should have been a cowboy.

4. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Author: Mark Twain
No, wait, this was my favorite book as a kid. Hmm. Now I'm not sure.

5. Letters from the Earth
Author: Mark Twain
The ultimate Mark Twain. Who can resist him?

6. Jane Eyre
Author: Charlotte Bronte
Ahh, gothic romance! Yum.

7. Bayou Rhapsody
Author: Sarah Storme
Okay, I'll admit I wrote this one, but I love the story. Mae is one of my favorite people, even if she isn't real (at least, I don't think she is).

8. Death of a Dancer
Author: S. H. Baker
And I love Dassas Cormier!!

9. Sick Puppy
Author: Carl Hiaasen
Who else can possibly write characters like this?

10. Beautiful Ghosts
Author: Eliot Pattison
A very powerful book set in Tibet -- an amazing story!
