Why I'm a Habitual Reader:
Voracious reader and writer of mysteries. Reading is how I fall asleep each night.
My List of Ten: Mysteries That Make You Think
1. The Fallen
Author: T. Jefferson Parker
Fascinating character whose synesthesia is both a blessing and a curse.
2. Motherless Brooklyn
Author: Jonathan Lethem
How Lethem gets inside the mind of a person with Tourette's Syndrome is beyond
me, but it's a tour de force.
3. California Girl
Author: T. Jefferson Parker
Again, Parker's characters took up residence in my head and hung out long after
I finished the last sentence.
4. Two For The Lions
Author: Lindsey Davis
All of the books in this excellent series raise questions in my mind about
life in Rome circa 70 A.D.
5. The Beekeeper's Apprentice
Author: Laurie King
Again, an excellent series, and one in which the author's imagination and prose
continue to amaze.
6. The Lonely Silver Rain
Author: John D. MacDonald
The last Travis McGee novel, while not the best in the series, makes me wonder
what might have come next had John D. lived a bit longer.
7. One For The Money
Author: Janet Evanovich
Makes me realize how difficult it is to write humor and sustain a series over
time.
8. Get Shorty
Author: Elmore Leonard
Quintessential Leonard--tight, spare dialogue, intriguing characters. Where
does Leonard meet these people? They're too real to be fictional.
9. Sick Puppy
Author: Carl Hiaasen
All of Hiaasen's books make me wonder when we're going to stop killing the
planet with our greed.
10. The Lincoln Lawyer
Author: Michael Connelly
Always entertaining, Connelly's writing makes me wonder why I can't win an
Edgar, too.
