Why I'm a Habitual Reader:
Reading has been my addiction since the age of twelve--and a very expensive addiction until I became a reviewer! Books are my eternal companions, which I take everywhere I go. There's nothing quite like holding a hamburger with one hand and a book with the other. There's nothing like reading in bed until you can't keep your eyes open. As an author, I love to study and dwell on the writers' words, styles, techniques. Reading propels me to write--the more I read, especially a great book, the more I want to rush to the computer and start pounding on the keyboard. A world without books would be unbearable.
My List of Ten: Books to Read and Re-Read Many Times
1. The Awakening
Author: Kate Chopin
Almost a novella, this little book is a gem about a woman's physical and spiritual
awakening.
2. Wuthering Heights
Author: Emily Bronte
What other book has such an obsessive, dark relationship between the two main
characters?
3. Interview With The Vampire
Author: Anne Rice
Rice's first and best book. A dark, beautifully written account of a young
man fallen to darkness.
4. Come Closer
Author: Sara Gran
Another little gem and a very scary book.
5. Stepford Wives
Author: Ira Levin
The book is better than the original movie. A masterpiece of suspense.
6. The Historian
Author: Elizabeth Kostova
History, vampires and beautiful prose--all in one.
7. The Ghost Writer
Author: John Hardwood
Who says you have to read the classics to see an exquisite writing style?
8. The Stranger
Author: Albert Camus
Probably the shortest yet most powerful book ever written.
9. The Secret History
Author: Donna Tartt
Dark, smart, sophisticated.
10. The Witching Hour
Author: Anne Rice
One of the best examples of boxes within boxes.
