Why I'm a Habitual Reader:
I read for fun. Before I retired from teaching science, most of my reading was work-related but now I read whatever I want. And what I want is mainly mysteries. Now, I've started writing mysteries (the second book in my travel mystery series will be coming out next year) and reading mysteries could be said to be career development! Could it get any better than this?
My List of Ten: Traditional Mysteries
1. Strong Poison
Author: Dorothy L. Sayers
Poor Harriet Vane. Devilishly clever plot.
2. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
Author: Agatha Christie
People got mad at Dame Agatha over this book. They said she wasn't playing
fair. Well, excuuse her!
3. The False Inspector Dew
Author: Peter Lovesey
A great romp on an old-time luxury liner.
4. The Third Man
Author: Graham Greene
It takes a great writer to make me love a scene in the sewers of Vienna.
5. The Hound of the Baskervilles
Author: Arthur Conan Doyle
Spooky. It's mainly a mystery but this book will also creep you out.
6. Jurassic Park
Author: Michael Crichton
As a science person myself, I wish I'd thought of this first. Insects in amber.
Why not?
7. Death is now my Neighbor
Author: Colin Dexter
It has the nastiest villian in modern literature.
8. Funerals are Fatal
Author: Agatha Christie
I just like this one because it has an interesting slant on motive.
9. The Vault
Author: Peter Lovesey
Got me from the very first sentence.
10. Have his Carcase
Author: Dorothy L. Sayers
I love this book because I figured it out before the end.
