Why I'm a Habitual Reader:
I am a habitual reader because my house is dirty but my books are well-read. My kids have to say "Mommy? Mommy?" five times before I hear them if I'm in the last quarter of any good book! I can have piles of laundry towering over me, but still be satisfied if the book I'm reading is good. Good thing I have a husband who is NOT a habitual reader and likes to clean!! Also, I think it's the duty of all good habitual readers to turn their children into habitual readers as well. My kids are well on their way!
My List of Ten: Books You Can't Forget
1. The Sparrow
Author: Mary Doria Russell
Makes her political point by using aliens from another planet. Brilliant!
2. Tandia
Author: Bryce Courtenay
The sequel to Power of One. So powerful and amazing I'm still thinking about
both of them years later.
3. The Kite Runner
Author: Khaled Hosseini
Do you really need me to say? Is there anyone in the entire world who has NOT
read this book yet? Really? Well, GO READ IT!
4. The Historian
Author: Elizabeth Kostova
Think you don't like Dracula stories? Think again. Be ready to sit on the edge
of your seat.
5. The Shadow of the Wind
Author: Carlos Ruiz Zafon
A mystery about books. What could be better?
6. The Cloud Atlas
Author: David Mitchell
He has more writing skill in his little finger than 90% of the authors I've
read. Your mouth will hang open.
7. Molokai'i
Author: Alan Brennert
A beautifully written story about a tragic period. I wonder why no one has
written well about this before, but now no one else can top this!
8. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Author: Lisa See
Don't eat before you read about the process of foot binding on girls in China.
A story of friendship and loss.
9. Shantaram
Author: Gregory David Roberts
Says it's fiction, but author mysteriously also did all these things in his
real life. Hmmmmmm.
10. Empire of the Sun
Author: J.D. Ballard
Turned into a movie by Steven Spielberg, but don't miss the book! A young teen,
separated from his parents in wartime -- it's gripping.
