Why I'm a Habitual Reader:

When I was a kid my parents had to kick me outside to play. Otherwise I would have stayed inside all day reading everything I could get my hands on -- my father's science fiction and thrillers, my mother's romances, my aunt and uncle's fantasy novels, my grandmother's mysteries. I devoured them all and am just frustrated that the industry keeps publishing books faster than I can read them!

My List of Ten: Eclectic Reading List

1. THE WITCH OF BLACKBIRD POND
Author: Elizabeth George Speare
So many reasons. This was one of my favorites from childhood and I've probably read it about five times. I always swore that I would name my first born child after the hero, but my husband vetoed the idea. Sigh. Nathaniel isn't much in vogue any more.

2. THE DEMOLISHED MAN
Author: Alfred Bester
First, wow. Outdated now and, okay, kinda sexist, but what left an impression on me was that the author =gave= you what you needed to figure things out and every one I've ever met who'd read the book had to smack him or herself in the head when it was revealed. Very impressive to play with mirrors that way in a book where you're reading linearly and can't be distracted as you can on-screen in a film, for example.

3. KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR
Author: Jude Devereaux
What a romance. I'm still in love with Nicholas.

4. DRAGON PRINCE
Author: Melanie Rawn
I love this entire trilogy, actually. As above, it has one of my all-time favorite characters, Rohan. He's unique, he's sexy and he's clever. A trifecta.

5. SHERLOCK HOLMES
Author: Arthur Conan Doyle
It's impossible to pick just one story or novel as a favorite. Holmes rules.

6. NERO WOLFE
Author: Rex Stout
Again, no possible way to single out just one book in this series. Archie Goodwin is such a wonderful pain in the posterior.

7. THE MIRROR OF HER DREAMS
Author: Stephen R. Donaldson
And THE MAN RIDES THROUGH -- I've read these each at least four times a piece. They're intricate and wonderful. Magic, just as they should be.

8. TOUCH NOT THE CAT
Author: Mary Stewart
Actually, it was a tough call between this and AIRS ABOVE GROUND and I can't believe I didn't list her higher. I'm not sure I'm going in a particular order here, but Mary Stewart is easily one of my all-time favorite writers and someone I turn to whenever I need to escape the world for a time.

9. ANITA BLAKE series
Author: Laurell K. Hamilton
Because, come on, sex and vampires. Plus, she's wonderful with characters.

10. STEPHANIE PLUM series
Author: Janet Evanovich
One word: Ranger. Oh, okay, and Lula and all the rest of her crazy cast. She's just too funny.
