Why I'm a Habitual Reader:

I'm addicted to books. I can't imagine life without them. Besides, how would I ever fall asleep at night?

My List of Ten: Books That Have Changed My View of the World

1. Prodigal Summer
Author: Barbara Kingsolver
A lot of her books contain some kind of theme on our relationship to the environment, but I loved the way Kingsolver tackles the importance of the whole ecosystem, one is left with an understanding of the vulnerability of trees, moths, and coyotes.

2. A Certain Slant of Light
Author: Laura Whitcomb
What an interesting and fresh take on what happens to us after death.

3. Stones from the River
Author: Ursula Hegi
I had never pondered what it must have been like to live under Nazi rule for those Germans who felt they had no choice but to stay silent. Definitely, a thought-provoking book.

4. The Hand Maid's Tale
Author: Margaret Atwood
A beautifully written and frightening world is created of what it might be like for a woman to live in a world of complete oppression.

5. The Loop
Author: Nicholas Evans
I was transported into the Montana wilderness. A fascinating look at how opposing sides can get so entrenched in their own agendas that situations escalate out of control.

6. Gone with the Wind
Author: Margaret Mitchell
Sure, this book provides a unique look at the southern life during war, but it also demonstrates the consequences of miscommunication in relationships.

7. The Red Tent
Author: Anita Diamont
A fascinating look at how women might have lived in Biblical times.

8. The Time Machine
Author: H.G. Wells
Unbelievable prose - I'm right there. Wells creates a world that shows us the importance of society and our environment. I can envision this futuristic world.

9. Beloved
Author: Toni Morrison
A chilling look at slavery and the idea that memories are transferred through generations.

10. The Tortilla Curtain
Author: T. Coraghessen Boyle
A book that I can't seem to forget. Set in Southern California's Topanga Canyon, the haves and the have nots face different challenges under very different living conditions.
