Why I'm a Habitual Reader:

I was just learning to read when my mother took me to a library the first time. I got a book called, "Val, a Dog." I read it, turned the last page and said, "I can do that!" Thus began a lifetime of reading mysteries, suspense, and romance, and writing, mostly nonfiction and short fiction. (I wrote for the confession magazines, remember those?) It took a while, I had to do some living first, but I did write a book, THE CHARMSTONE. My next book comes out next year, RUNNING FROM STRANGERS. Check it out!

My List of Ten: Books That Blew Me Away

1. Gone With the Wind
Author: Margaret Mitchell
Scarlett O'Hara is the ultimate survivor! I so admired that.

2. Zero Game
Author: Brad Meltzer
Suspenseful! I had just visited Washington DC, so could identify with his setting and the story.

3. Spring Water Station
Author: Linda Lael Miller
Inspired me to write an Old West romance, SAGE CANE'S HOUSE OF GRACE AND FAVOR.

4. ANYTHING
Author: Phyllis Whitney
Author of the original 70s "gothics"-adventurous women, compelling mansions, mysterious heroes. Loved it!

5. Paranoia
Author: Joseph Finder
Corporate intrigue has always fascinated me.

6. Jurassic Park
Author: Michael Crichton
Read into the wee hours, fell asleep on the couch with this book on my chest, woke up and kept reading to the end, didn't even stop for breakfast.

7. Speak Softly, She Can Hear
Author: Pam Lewis
Suspenseful and innovative plot.

8. Half Broken Things
Author: Morag Joss
READ THIS! You'll feel for these flawed characters.

9. ANYTHING
Author: Tony Hillerman
I lived on the Navajo Reservation in Monument Valley. Love his books!

10. Atlas Shrugged
Author: Ayn Rand
AN IMPORTANT BOOK!!
