Why I'm a Habitual Reader:
I developed a love of books and reading when I was a child. As a kid you rarely saw me without my nose in a book. As an adult, I'm usually reading at least two books at once. There are a lot of things I could do without in this world, but books are not one of them. Two years ago I also became a published author, writing the kinds of books I enjoy reading the most. . . mysteries! I decided I wanted to write a mystery series featuring the kind of character you don't see very often in mystery fiction, an African-American woman. My top ten list features my favorite mysteries featuring African-American women. I only hope my own Kendra Clayton mystery series is worthy of joining this list of talented and accomplished authors.
My List of Ten: Sistah Sleuths
1. Blanche on the Lam
Author: Barbara Neely
This is the first book in the Blanche White mystery series. It is also the
first mystery I ever read that featured an African-American woman as a sleuth.
2. When Death Comes Stealing
Author: Valerie Wilson Wesley
This is the first book in the Tamara Hayle mystery series. Tamara Hayle is
a private eye who is also a single mother and juggles mystery and motherhood.
3. Rhode Island Red
Author: Charlotte Carter
Street saxophone player Nanette Hayes is introduced in the first book of this
quirky series and easily steals the show from the plot.
4. If I Should Die
Author: Grace F. Edwards
Mali Anderson is an ex-cop working on a PhD in social work and raising her
orphaned nephew when she stumbles across a mystery in this excellent series
debut.
5. Inner City Blues
Author: Paula Woods
Charlotte Justice is a Los Angeles cop who is dealing with racism on the force,
when she finds the wallet of a prominent black doctor under the body of the
man who killed her husband and daughter in this thrilling debut.
6. Details at Ten
Author: Ardella Garland
Chicago TV journalist Georgia Barnett interviews a little girl who witnessed
a gang killing. When the little girl is kidnapped as a result, Georgia's guilt
causes her to get involved in the investigation and butt heads with the handsome
lead detective. Ardella Garland is the pen name of bestselling author Yolanda
Joe.
7. Dead Time
Author: Eleanor Taylor Bland
Transplanted Chicago police detective Marti MacAlister moves to Lincoln Prairie,
Illinois, and investigates the murder of a neurotic woman in a flop house
with her new, less-than-thrilled partner in this gritty debut police procedural.
8. A Darker Shade of Crimson
Author: Pamela Thomas Graham
Harvard Professor Victoria Chase finds herself compelled to investigate the
mysterious death of Harvard's most powerful black woman in this winning debut.
9. Somebody Else's Child
Author: Terris McMahan Grimes
When her mother's elderly neighbor is shot in an apparent drive-by, Theresa
Galloway finds herself prowling the streets of Sacramento in search of the
killer and the dead woman's missing grandchild in this award-winning debut.
10. One Must Wait
Author: Penny Mickelbury
Stricken by a crise de conscience when she nearly lets an innocent policeman
go to prison, successful District of Columbia defense attorney Carol Ann Gibson
quits her job. Her husband, also an attorney, plans to quit as well: he hates
working for crooks. Murder intercedes, however, and Carol Ann winds up in bigoted
Louisiana looking for evidence against the corporate polluters who instigated
her husband's death.
