Why I'm a Habitual Reader:

I think I was born reading. I know I wanted to write books even before I could read. Since learning, I've been a compulsive reader ever since.

My List of Ten: Books that make me happy

1. The Roots of Heaven
Author: Romain Gary
I used to think this was the book I'd have wanted to write if I wrote books. Now that I write books, I still wish I'd written it :)

2. Lonesome Dove
Author: Larry McMurtry
Wonderful people. Wonderful stories.

3. Half Magic
Author: Edward Eager
Whimsical, magical, and hysterical.

4. Little Witch
Author: Anna Bennett
I read this to the children of the entire neighborhood when my girls were little, and they didn't even ask to watch TV.

5. Crocodile on the Sandbank
Author: Elizabeth Peters
Okay, I wish I'd written this one, too :)

6. The Talisman Ring
Author: Georgette Heyer
I love most of Georgette Heyer's books. This one edged out a couple of others because of the heroine's marvelously oblivious brother.

7. The House Without a Key
Author: Earl Derr Biggers
Charlie Chan in Hawaii in the 1920s. What could be better than this? I'm only sorry Mr. Biggers died before he could produce a few more Charlie Chan books than the six or seven he had time for.

8. Jane Eyre
Author: Charlotte Bronte
The most wonderfully romantic book ever.

9. A Christmas Carol
Author: Charles Dickens
What can I say? It's a classic for good reason.

10. The Moonstone
Author: Wilkie Collins
This just seems like a perfect book to me. It's written by a bunch of different characters, all of whom have their own voices, and they make a whole magnificent mystery.
