Bookstore: Books Unlimited
Location: San Mateo, California
Specialty: Fiction, Young Adult Fiction, Art, Hitory, Biographies

In these sad times when so many fine used book stores have closed, it's so good to know that there are still a few good ones left. One that stands out in my mind is Jeannie Mancini's Books Unlimited in San Mateo near the Fairgrounds, it's well worth the drive even if you have to drive a great distance. Any book lover, regardless of their interests is bound to find a treasure their. When I go, I can barely make it past the first 10 feet. The Proprietor, Jeannie, is a rare jewel, so knowledgeable and passionate about books, what a pleasure it is to talk to her about our mutual love affair with books. I think it's uncanny how she can recommend just the right book for whatever reading mood I'm in. In these inflationary times when it's hard to keep up with rising prices, it's refreshing to know that your dollar goes a very long way at Books Unlimited. The prices are low but you still receive top quality books plus exceptional service.

Bookstore: Book Haven
Location: Monterey, California
Specialty: General used and out of print books
Recommended By: Jeannie Mancini

There is nothing like walking into a bookstore filled with thousands of old, used, out of print and even better, antiquarian books. Book Haven in Monterey offers wonderful memories of books from the past. The atmosphere has cathedral ceilings with wooden rafters, skylights, nice tables for quaint displays & two very friendly owners that welcome you in with thier wonderful smiles & vast knowledge of used books. Prices are very reasonable and quality is high. It's a large store that offers all genres, and one can easily spend the whole day getting lost, piling up more books than one planned to afford, but simply cant resist!

Bookstore: The Big Sleep
Location: St Louis, Missouri
Specialty: Mystery
Recommended By: Jo A Hiestand

Being a mystery writer, I would of course be attracted to a store that features nothing but these books! But besides feeling cozy and incredibly happy in the store, I also marvel at the owners' support of local authors. Of course it's good for their business, but very few of the local chains go out of their way to offer book signings. The Big Sleep makes you feel welcome -- both as author and browser -- and the owners have immense knowledge of the mystery genre. They go out of their way to order books, set up signings, or just chat with customers, finding out readers' preferences so they can suggest books that might be of interest. A superb little store tucked away in St Louis' Central West End. Long may it prosper!

Bookstore: Old Town Books
Location: Nederland, Colorado
Specialty: Used books and new books by local authors
Recommended By: Sandra Shwayder Sanchez

Old Town Books on highway 119 in Nederland, Colorado is a wonderful old house with several small rooms filled with used books. In the front room you can find hand made soaps (the owner, Kimba, not only makes the soaps herself but grows the herbs she uses in them in her garden), and beautiful jewelry, pottery and other hand crafted items by local artisans. There is a small kitchen ice-cream store within the building and in addition to ice cream you can get hot chocolate, cider or espresso and soup. On Saturday nights local musicians come in to play and you can get a good meal while you listen. There is also a section in the front room to display new books by local authors. It is in every way a "community" bookstore.

Bookstore: Lafayette Book Store
Location: Lafayette, California
Specialty: General
Recommended By: Danelle Farias

The reason I think this bookstore is very special is because of the knowledgeable people who work there whether you are looking for something to read or buying a gift. They are all constantly reading and give good advice on what you might enjoy and if they don't have what you need, your special order will be there in a couple of days. The people from the owner Dave, Linda the manager to the others who work there give the store a very warm feeling and if you don't find what you want go around the corner to the wonderful used bookstore. Wonderful place to go.

Bookstore: Towne Center Books
Location: Pleasanton, California
Specialty: Literary Fiction, Cooking, Yoga, Children's
Recommended By: Lisa Gray

I love Towne Center Books. I totally believe in the independent bookstore model. When I go in, they are "handselling" books that the publishers don't necessarily push, but that you HAVE to read. They have books for me that I've ordered in a day or two. I just love to browse in a small bookstore where the people who work there are working there because books are their life. Plus, when you're done, you can walk around downtown Pleasanton, which is a pleasure in itself!
