Josh Michaels is worth more dead than alive. He just doesn't know it yet. He has no idea why someone would try to kill him, clearly that's exactly what happened. When an SUV forced Josh's car off the road and into a river, it might have been an accident. But when Josh looked up at the road, expecting to see the SUV's driver rushing to help him, all he saw was the driver watching him calmly, then giving him a "thumbs down" sign. That was merely the first attempt on Josh's life, all of them designed to look like accidents, and all of them very nearly fatal. With his time and maybe his luck running out and no one willing to believe him, Josh had better figure out who wants him dead and why before it's too late.

Author: Annette Blair
Genre: Single Title Contemporary Comedy
ISBN: 0425213463

Talk about meeting the man of your dreams ... A Highland Scot with a hidden agenda and a hereditary Pictish Witch in denial discover shared dreams and a century-old spell that could change them forever.

Salem, Massachusetts:

Like her female ancestors before her, Victoria Cartwright inherits the key to the bewitched contents of her family's mysterious attic wardrobe ... except that no one has ever succeeded in opening it. Only the daughter who inherits her ancestor's magic will be able to turn the key ... meet her destiny ... and complete her ancestor's spell.

Caperglen, Scotland:

A pariah in his own village, like his ancestors before him, Rory MacKenzie is searching for the carousel unicorn that his many-great grandfather carved and was bewitched into giving away. Bringing the family treasure back to Scotland and reuniting it with the other eleven zodiac figures will satisfy the locals who were raised with the daft notion that the unicorn will restore village prosperity. It died the day the unicorn was shipped to America a century before. But all Rory wants is to restore the MacKenzie name to dignity.

When a carousel unicorn with the sign of Aquarius beneath its forelock shows up on the Antiques Roadshow, Rory heads to Salem, Massachusetts to see if Miss Victoria Cartwright's unicorn has the hidden compartment that his ancestor carved beneath the saddle.

After they meet, their shared dreams escalate and become more explicit. Something witchy or downright magical is happening in Salem.

Aida Benedetto is a successful thirty-year-old food writer with an on-again, off-again boyfriend and an Italian American family with endless expectations, relentless traditions, and little patience with Aida when she expresses her reluctance to become her nephew's godmother. Birch McFarland, who is pushing for on-again status, was also raised by a strict Catholic father and understands Aida's sense of guilt as well as her duty to a faith she's silently questioned for years. When mutual domestic conflicts dissolve the lingering web between the couple and their families, Aida and Birch attempt to fashion new versions of faith and family. Before these embryonic ideas can begin to mature, the force of personal tragedy destroys all that Aida and Birch have worked toward. Abandoned by Birch and alienated from her family members, Aida is forced to free herself from the filters through which she previously viewed herself. The novel explores the personal evolution of a woman, her faith, and her family.

"Love Made of Heart" Title: Love Made of Heart
Author: Teresa LeYung Ryan
Genre: Fiction (Women's)
ISBN: 0-7582-0217-2

Love Made of Heart (a mother-daughter story) is:

archived at the San Francisco History Center;
recommended by the California School Library Association;
recommended by the California Reading Association;
used in Sociology classes;
used in Advanced English-as-a-Second-Language classes.

PUBLISHER'S NOTE on Love Made of Heart:

The Chinese word for 'love' is made up of many brush strokes. In the center of the word 'love' is the word 'heart.' Love is made of heart.

In Love Made of Heart, protagonist Ruby Lin is forced to look into her past when her mother shuts down her own painful world. The story explores the complex bonds between mothers and daughters, the choices we make when our hearts are broken, and the choices we make when our hearts are healed.

PRAISE and REVIEWS for Love Made of Heart:

"Love Made of Heart is a book made of wisdom. Teresa LeYung Ryan writes of mothers and daughters, but the truth of her fiction strikes much deeper; beyond family, beyond gender, all the way to the fragile, universal heart."
Frank Baldwin, author of Jake & Mimi and Balling the Jack

"Love Made of Heart, a semi-autobiographical story of a young Chinese immigrant and her mother . . . For those seeking inspiration during difficult times, this courageous book is half hot tub, half massage. But only after some painful, albeit unpredictable plot twists."
Lori Hope, film maker and author of Help Me Live: 20 Things People with Cancer Want You to Know

"With raw, engaging dialogue as its narrative essence, Love Made of Heart dismantles the easy clichés of unconscious loyalties and entices us with searing honesty to journey through complex psychological realms with its female protagonist until we are left with a quiet appreciation of the truthfully tender."
Lydia Kwa, author of This Place Called Absence

"In the novel Love Made of Heart, Ruby's struggles to make peace with her life etch themselves deeply into the reader's own heart, so that you find yourself caring and wondering about how she is doing long after you've read the last page of her story." Carol Schaefer, author of The Other Mother

"First-time Bay Area author Teresa LeYung Ryan has written a fascinating novel with a lot of heart . . . delicately tiptoes the fine line between fiction and creative non-fiction, making believers of us all."
Victor Turks for The San Francisco Nob Hill Gazette

"Cruel Music" Title: Cruel Music
Author: Beverle Graves Myers
Genre: Historical Mystery
ISBN: 1-59058-230-6

Cruel Music is the third book in the Baroque Mystery series set in 18th-century Italy. The impending death of Pope Clement XII has turned Rome into a seething cauldron of ambition, intrigue, greed, and murder. To snare the ungodly killer who haunts the cardinal's villa, Tito must learn to spy as well as he sings.

In Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, reviewer Robert C. Hahn says, "Myers sets the stage beautifully, and her Tito Amato is an endearingly sympathetic character whose company should be enjoyed for many more performances."

"The Ragtime Kid" Title: The Ragtime Kid
Author: Larry Karp
Genre: Mystery/Crime Fiction
ISBN: 1-59058-326-4

In 1899, a fifteen-year-old boy named Brun Campbell ran away from home to take piano lessons from Scott Joplin in Sedalia, Missouri. Joplin nicknamed him The Ragtime Kid. That same year, John Stark, a White music store owner, published Joplin's breakthrough composition, Maple Leaf Rag, under a contract providing royalties to the composer. That was extraordinary. Those days, a young, largely-unknown Black composer was lucky to receive a small lump-sum payment for his work, along with a warning to not let the door hit him in a sensitive place on his way out.

No history of ragtime even begins to explain how this remarkable arrangement between Joplin and Stark came to pass, and that struck me as odd. Was there a reason why this story couldn't be told? Over many years of reading about the ragtime pioneers and listening to their music, I wondered. Finally, I decided to explore the situation by moving young Brun Campbell into the picture - he was, after all, there at the time - and plugging the historical holes with fiction. And as I worked, I was pleased to see my crime novel develop into the story of two strong-willed men who could not be divided by their skin color because they both spoke the universal language of the heart. I hope you'll enjoy it.

Larry Karp found a worthy, though neglected segment of American music history to set a cleverly devised story of fact and fiction. By filling some of the undocumented gaps with a plausible tale, he retells the early history of ragtime, with its undercurrent of racism and business dealings. Along the way he provides deserving recognition for several creators of the art form, aside from Scott Joplin and "The Ragtime Kid," Brun Campbell.

"Burden of Memory" Title: Burden of Memory
Author: Vicki Delany
Genre: Mystery
ISBN: 1590582667

Miss Madison isn't interested in a bestseller. She wants to leave a record of her life and most specifically of her years with the Canadian Army Nursing Sisters of World War II. Her service in the British and then European theater was filled with triumphs and bitter losses and forever shaped her life. Can Elaine tell her story working with decades of old documents?
Settling into the family "cottage" and what remains of a lifestyle long gone, Elaine reconnects with her love of researching the past. But somehow her project--she soon discovers the first writer hired oddly drowned in the Lake--stirs someone to murder. . . .

"Vicki Delany's second novel effectively uses the Muskoka setting for a very fine novel about memory and class and caste in old Ontario."
The Globe and Mail

"The striking setting, the picture of the Canadian social elite and several deftly handled subplots make for a richly textured and highly satisfying read."
Publishers Weekly

Illustrated by the author, The Grasshopper's Secret is a magical tale - a book for the child in every adult and the adult in every child.

How will a fierce, angry adolescent girl learn compassion for a young boy whom she despises because he is delicate and wants to please everybody?
Zelda lives in Los Angeles; Kidcou is an orphan who has come from Europe to live with her family, bringing with him his one treasure---a grasshopper in a cage. Kidcou insists it's a magical grasshopper, but Zelda mocks him. However, on a full moon night, as Zelda sets the grasshopper free, she happens upon the secret formula: The grasshopper turns into a strangely beautiful woman who invites Zelda on a journey.

In leaps and bounds, the Grasshopper takes Zelda through time and space -- and lands her in Kidcou's past. From Austria and Germany to England and Italy, Zelda and the Grasshopper follow the dramatic events that cause Kidcou, a gifted singer in the Vienna Boys Choir, to lose his voice.

The journey reaches Venice, Italy, where Kidcou is taken in by his uncle Carlo, a scientist and kind teacher. Here, in the mysterious city of ancient palaces and canals, Zelda begins to notice that there is a connection between the Grasshopper and Uncle Carlo. The two of them seem to be plotting something... The more Zelda figures things out, the more she comes to feel that she may be needed---especially when the adults are failing, when Uncle Carlo falls ill and might die, when Zelda s mother makes a surprise appearance in Venice, and when the Grasshopper disappears into her cage just when Zelda needs her because Kidcou is in danger...

If Zelda solves the Grasshopper's secret in time to impact the events, and if she manages to enter Kidcou's story in the past - what will happen in the present?
