Title: New Coyote |
| Author: Michael Bergey | |
| Genre: Fantasy | |
| ISBN: 1-59414-332-6 | |
The creatures of legend have come upon hard times. Their power stems from
human belief, but humans believe in "Science" now. We have little
use for magic.
Even Coyote shiftiest and most adaptable of them all can't quite comprehend this new view of reality. He refuses to accept defeat, however, and devises a plan to have himself reborn without memories so that he can grow up within our contemporary culture, and fully understand our way of thinking.
And where would Coyote go for formative guidance, anyway? Why, a commune, of course. Sunbow farms, to be precise. It's peaceful, wild, and very private. Very private indeed. Marijuana plantations are like that.
So the Narks have come and raided his now home. Coyote can deal with that. And there's the flood, of course, and trigger-happy coyote-blasting neighbors, and troublemaking by Coyote's magical Spirit-Pups . . . all no problem.
It's those death-threats from Fox that are hard to take. How can Fox say that Coyote needs to be killed for his own good? That just doesn't make sense!

Title: Out of Cabrini |
| Author: Dave Case | |
| Genre: Mystery | |
| ISBN: 1-59414-378-1 | |
Excerpt from Chicago Tribune Review:
"So many Chicago-area mystery writers are given credit for help by Chicago
Police Sgt. Dave Case in his acknowledgements to "Out of Cabrini" that
it might seem to take a village to write a terrific police mystery. Michael
Allen Dymmoch, Libby Fischer Hellmann, Eleanor Taylor Bland and John Kamp
(whom you might know better as John Sandford) are on the list. Add jacket
raves from Sara Paretsky and Barbara D'Amato, and you have the ingredients
for a dream panel at the Bouchercon mystery fest.
Judging by this first effort, Case has a good chance of becoming a mystery writer of that stature. "Out of Cabrini" has a few rough edges, but on virtually every page there's a character or a scene of action or an exchange of words that resound with artistic reality.
After providing a brief history of Chicago's Cabrini-Green public-housing project--it was the home of mostly Italian-Americans when it began in 1942 but quickly became predominantly African-American--Case creates a fictional police tactical team out of the 18th District that works only in Cabrini-Green. On this team, lead character Stacey Macbeth and his partner, Mike Zito, do their best to stay alive and keep a semblance of peace.
"Out of Cabrini" is not one of those jolly cop-shop comedies so popular in the genre, but it does have many hilarious moments--such as the opening scene, in which Macbeth and Zito, drunk as skunks, go to a tongue-piercing salon. Zito gets a gold screw installed; Macbeth chickens out, which comes in handy when a perp steals their car and Zito's shouted commands are made unintelligible by his recent surgery.
Back in the serious world of the 18th District, Lonnie Huggins, a top member of the Mickey Cobra gang who has just been released from prison, is rewarded for his loyalty with 4 kilos of cocaine and the chance to open a new drug territory in Minneapolis. He stores the bricks carefully in his new ride, a Lexus GS300, and then goes home to Cabrini-Green for some sex and violence with his wife, Latricia.
When the violence takes on lethal overtones, a frightened Latricia does what she did to get Huggins into prison the first time: She calls Macbeth, and she tips him off about the drugs. But the drugs are too well hidden for the impound team: The loaded car goes into the system and is sold to a man who wants to impress his mistress. From his holding cell, Huggins orders his gang cohorts to retrieve the Lexus, at whatever cost in blood and bullets is required.
Case, a 19-year Chicago police veteran now working in special operations,
has two options: retire and spend his time as the best-selling author he
has a good chance of becoming, or stay a police officer and collect more
of the marvelous chunks of life and death that make "Out of Cabrini" such
a rare creation. I'm hoping he'll choose the second option."

Title: The Murder Hole |
| Author: Lillian Stewart Carl | |
| Genre: Mystery/Romance/Paranormal | |
| ISBN: 1-59414-480-X | |
Deep water . . .
Jean Fairbairn is off to write a story about the haunted waters of Loch Ness. She has an appointment with American scientist Roger Dempsey, who is using his latest gadgets to try and prove that the legend of the monster, Nessie, is true.
Jean s business is checking out legends. Some hold water, some don't, and some are about much more than H2O.
But the troubled water she finds at Loch Ness is colder than its snow-melt and darker than its peat-stained depths. Sonar and other remote-sensing tools might find Nessie, but what scientific instrument can plumb the mysteries of death?
Troubled, too, are the waters that run between Jean and Detective Inspector Alasdair Cameron. Will another encounter bridge the depths that lie between them? Or will their story end at the hands of a murderer, in the icy water of a loch that never gives up its dead?
"The author has a wonderful sense of humor and a gives us a story that moves right along and a heroine who doesn t take herself too seriously." Diana Vickery, Cozy Library
THE MURDER HOLE is the second book in the Jean Fairbairn/Alasdair Cameron series: America's exile and Scotland's finest on the trail of all-too-living legends.
Book one is THE SECRET PORTRAIT.
Jean has a secret she sees dead people, and Scotland, especially Edinburgh, is full of ghosties and ghoulies, not to mention egomaniacal American dot.com millionaires who are trying to buy a heroic ancestry that includes a familial link to Bonnie Prince Charlie. Throw in a gold coin from the Prince's missing horde and a couple of men who look fine in kilts, a dash of bagpipes, and descriptions of Edinburgh so vivid you can almost taste the haggis and you have a most enjoyable read. Shirley Wetzel, Over My Dead Body
Mystery, history and sexual tension blend with a taste of the wild beauty of the Highlands: an enjoyable tale Kirkus Reviews.
Stay tuned for book three, THE BURNING GLASS, in September 2007. Leaving Edinburgh to the crowds attending the annual Festival, Jean and Alasdair move into the caretaker's cottage of an old and spooky castle near Rosslyn Chapel, which has been made so famous by The Da Vinci Code that only tour groups are admitted. Ferniebank Castle includes a small chapel that's very similar and obviously related to Rosslyn, but is off the beaten path. Or so they think. . . .

Title: Blue Devil Island |
| Author: Stephen Mark Rainey | |
| Genre: Speculative Fiction | |
| ISBN: 9781594144424 | |
AUTUMN, 1943: The beginning of the American offensive against the Japanese
in the South Pacific. Just west of the Solomon Islands lies a remote, desert
island called Conquest, where the U.S. Navy stations a new fighting squadron,
led by Lieutenant Commander Drew McLachlan, an ace pilot and veteran of the
Battle of Coral Sea.
With his group of air warriors, who call themselves the Blue Devils, McLachlan soars into frequent combat with the Japanese, inflicting serious casualties upon the enemy. However, on the squadron's island home, signs appear that it may not be entirely alone, for in nearby volcanic caves, McLachlan finds evidence of past habitation by unknown natives -- natives that resemble no known living race, and that may yet exist in the mysterious subterranean catacombs. As the tension on the island mounts, McLachlan is forced to fight on two fronts: against their known enemy, the Japanese, and an unknown, predatory force that leaves mutilated victims as the only evidence of its presence.
As the Solomons campaign enters into its final skirmishes, the Japanese at last turn their attention to Conquest Island. In the final conflict, the Blue Devils find themselves the target of an overwhelming assault by the desperate Imperial Japanese forces -- and McLachlan must face the reality that the key to his men s survival lies deep in the dark and deadly caves of Conquest Island itself.

"Jones is back and taking on new genres and challenges in this high-intensity
time-traveling war thriller. Love can truly span generations, as these soul

"It's great fun to see Mel, a thoroughly 21st century woman, trying
to cope with the culture, and the uncomfortable shoes, of wartime England.
When she joins the crew in a mission to occupied France, the reader can imagine
what it must have been like inside the bomber, trying to complete their mission
under terrifying circumstances. In this homage to the Greatest Generation,
Jones takes us on a wild and often poignant ride through time."

Title: TILLAMOOK 1952, A Novel |

On August 24, 1933, Verlin Victory Lundigun, 32, catches a piece of pitch-fired
flaming tree trunk with his face. He is one warrior among thousands fighting
the fiercest forest fire in U.S. history the infamous Tillamook Burn. Verlin
lives that day, but nine months later he is dead from a gunshot. Eighteen
years later a nephew is driven to find out why and how Verlin died.
Testimonial:
"Wright held my attention from beginning to end with his fascinating characters,
historical details, intersecting lives, the search for some kind of truth,
and twists in the tale. I especially enjoyed getting to know Louis and
his struggle to learn more about himself, and consequently, becoming a
better person. I also appreciated the attention to detail; the descriptions
of Tillamook and surrounding areas, and almost making me believe I was
smelling the salt air! It was a great read!"

Title: Death Roll |
| Author: Marilyn Victor and Michael Allan Mallory | |
| Genre: Mystery | |
| ISBN: 1-59414-544-X | |
Death Roll: Nevada Barr meets The Crocodile Hunter.
Who would want the Director of the Minnesota Valley Zoo dead? Everyone! Anthony
Wright made a career of getting what he wanted, whatever the price. When
he's murdered and ends up as a late night snack for the zoo's fifteen-foot
crocodile, few are shedding any tears. After police arrest the lead crocodile
handler, it's up to zoologoist Lavender "Snake" Jones to prove
her friend's innocence. But is she really helping? Each lie she exposes only
serves to strengthen the case against him, rattles her belief in those she
trusts and, in the end, threatens her own safety. With the help of her Aussie
husband, herpetologist Jeff Jones, Snake hacks her way through the shadowy
underworld of illegal animal trading to uncover a snakepit of sordid deeds,
secret pasts, and corruption.
Snake uses her knowledge of animal behavior and the powers of observation developed in caring for them to solve the murder.
(And yes, Jeff Jones, Snake's irrepressibly, over the top husband, is inspired by Steve Irwin. Our manuscript was sold eight months before his tragic death. We hope readers see Jeff as an affectionate tribute to everyone's favorite Crocodile Hunter.)
"A competent debut with engaging characters and an intriguing behind-the-scenes
look at zoo life."
--Kirkus Reviews
"If you enjoy Animal Planet and like mysteries then you'll certainly
fall for Snake and Jeff Jones. They're a modern day Nick and Nora Charles
for the zoology set. Kudos to the authors for imparting their knowledge of
wildlife in an entertaining mystery with more twists and turns than a snake."
--Jessica Speart, Unsafe Harbor
"The Minnesota Valley Zoo hosts the Beastly Ball to raise public awareness and funding. However, as the staff escorts the visiting dignitaries to the newest exhibit, the Australian Walkabout Trail featuring Crocodile Island, the corpse of the disliked director Anthony Wright is found.
Police Detective Ole Sorenson arrests lead crocodile handler Johnny Ray "JR" Erling as the evidence strongly points to him especially since he vanished soon after Wright's mutilated body was found in the habitat of Sebastian and Babe. Zookeeper Lavender "Snake" Jones and her spouse herpetologist Jeff believe otherwise; they investigate, but every clue the amateur sleuths uncover affirms the police belief that JR killed Wright.
Timing aside with the recent tragic death of the Crocodile Hunter as Jeff
seems so much like Steve Irwin; this is a fine amateur sleuth tale in which
Snake's investigation enables the audience to see what goes on behind the
exhibits of a zoo. The deep look at a zoo is cleverly interwoven into the
whodunit, but is so well done, the Minnesota Valley Zoo feels like a key
character. Fans will enjoy this fine murder mystery in which every clue points
toward JR being a killer hiding his illegal peddling of wild animals with
only Snake and Jeff having doubts that are slowly vanishing with one clue
after another."
